A sanity check for any quote you receive. A credible US agency bills senior engineering time at roughly $110–$190 per hour. Divide any quote by that and ask whether the resulting hours plausibly cover the scope. A $9,000 figure for a custom eCommerce build implies about 60 hours — that is a theme installation, not a build.

What drives the number

Five factors, in order of impact

01

Unique template count

Not page count. A 60-page site built from 7 templates costs less than a 12-page site where every layout is bespoke. Always ask an agency how many unique templates are in the quote.

02

Custom business logic

A contact form is trivial. A quote calculator that prices by zip code, checks inventory and routes to the right rep is a software project. Logic is where estimates diverge most.

03

Integration count

CRM, ERP, payments, shipping, booking. Each adds build time, error handling and maintenance. Two-way sync costs roughly triple what one-way costs.

04

Compliance requirements

WCAG 2.2 AA, HIPAA, SOC 2 or PCI DSS each add real scope. Designing for them costs a fraction of retrofitting them, which is why we ask early.

05

Content ownership

Who writes the copy, sources the photography and migrates the existing content? Content is the most common cause of a delayed launch and the most commonly excluded line in a low quote.

FAQ

Pricing questions

Why do you publish prices when most agencies do not?

Because the alternative wastes everyone's time. If our starting figures are well outside your budget, you should know that in thirty seconds rather than after three calls and a proposal. Publishing ranges filters for fit in both directions.

What makes a project land at the top of a range rather than the bottom?

Integration count, compliance requirements, unique template count and content volume - in roughly that order. Two projects with identical page counts can differ by 3x on those four factors alone.

Do you require a deposit?

Fixed-scope projects run on a milestone schedule, typically 30% to start, then payments tied to agreed deliverables. Dedicated team engagements are invoiced monthly in advance. Retainers are invoiced monthly.

Are there costs beyond your invoice?

Yes, and we itemize them in every proposal: hosting and infrastructure, third-party licences, ad spend for paid media, and any stock imagery or premium fonts. We never mark these up - you pay the vendor directly wherever possible.

Can we start small and expand?

That is how most of our long-term clients began. A discovery engagement or a single well-defined phase is a low-risk way to find out whether we work well together before committing to a larger build.

Do you offer nonprofit or startup rates?

We reserve a small amount of capacity each quarter for registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits at reduced rates. For early-stage startups we can structure phased scopes that fit a seed budget, but we do not work for equity.
